This is probably the most well-established navigational app for smartphones, thanks to its ability to pinpoint your position on screen and
to plot routes that you can later navigate along. There are predesigned routes too, that you can search by location, download and follow.
It also works without a mobile signal and maps are stored so accessible offline. Basic mapping is included for free but if you want to view
high-quality detailed mapping such as OS or similar, then you need to pay extra. For example, 1:25k OS mapping of the Lake District
National Park is £28.99 and the whole of Great Britain at 1:50k is £89.99. The large screen of your phone ensures these digital maps really
sparkle with detail. But of course - as with any phone app - it will come down to battery life, and how well you protect your phone.
