In a good light the Crow's , ( Corvus corone corone ) all-black
plumage shows a metallic sheen, having a greener look than the Rook's
( Corvus corax )purplish gloss. However, the heavy black bill and lack of a bare
face patch are this bird's major distinguishing features. Also its neater, more compact, appearance, should help identify it. Like other
Crows it is a ground feeder, walking or hopping with equal ease, taking a wide variety of foods, from grain, vegetable matter, insects
and worms to small birds, eggs, small mammals and amphibians, with a partiality for carrion of all sorts. It will also feed along the
shoreline and will smash crabs and molluscs by dropping them from a height. The flight is slower and more deliberate than the
Rook's and the tail is square-ended.
